LPSC Building, Home of the LPI

Oregon State University, Oregon’s premier research-intensive university, seeks a distinguished scientist and an entrepreneurial leader to direct the Linus Pauling Institute (LPI). LPI is one of the world’s most renowned research enterprises studying the role of micronutrients and phytochemicals in disease prevention and promoting optimal health. The next director will provide vision and leadership to ensure LPI fulfills its potential as a nexus of cutting edge health research at OSU, across Oregon and beyond.

LPI was founded by two-time Nobel Laureate, Dr. Linus Pauling, who spent the latter part of his life pioneering research on molecular nutrition, and is remembered for championing the benefits of vitamin C. Today LPI faculty and staff are building on Pauling’s legacy through research and outreach into healthy aging, cardiometabolic disease prevention, and cancer prevention and intervention.

Under the next director’s guidance, LPI will play a substantial role in OSU’s growing health sciences initiative and will continue to be a hub for competitive federal research funding. With an endowment of $10.2 million, LPI’s principal investigators are nimble and highly cross disciplinary, with joint appointments and collaborations that span five colleges. LPI has also been identified as a promising bridge between Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and OSU in cancer prevention research and translational medicine.

The next director of LPI will be an accomplished basic scientist with a passion for extending the Linus Pauling legacy. S/he will be responsible for expanding the Institute’s reach and influence and will have a demonstrated track record in organizational visioning, building, and fundraising. Reporting to the Vice President for Research, and working closely with the Scientific Advisory Board and the Director’s Circle, the director of LPI will lead and motivate all faculty and staff including 12 principal investigators, and various researchers, staff, and students. The director will work closely with the OSU Foundation, and be  responsible for all aspects of the Institute’s research activities, financial and budget management, outreach, and other operations. In addition, s/he will have experience in multi institution/cross campus collaborations with a track record in leveraging strong institutional partnerships. To that end, the successful candidate will address the following key opportunities and challenges:

  • Articulate a compelling vision and growth plan for the future of LPI;
  • Strengthen the Institute’s financial sustainability by diversifying and growing its funding portfolio;
  • Further unify the LPI through organizational restructuring and faculty and staff development;
  • Raise the visibility of LPI through strategic partnerships within the state of Oregon and beyond.
