Diet and Optimum Health Conference

The Linus Pauling Institute's seventh biennial conference on "Diet and Optimum Health" was a resounding success. It was held May 15-18, 2013, on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, Oregon, USA.

Program

Diet and Optimum Health 2013 emphasized dietary and lifestyle approaches to improving human health and preventing or treating disease, including dietary supplements, micronutrients, and antioxidants. Pariticipants included scientists and health professionals in biochemistry, nutrition, preventive medicine, public health, endocrinology, cardiology, oncology, and gerontology. We enjoyed a strong scientific look at the cutting edge of nutrition research. The program featured individual sessions including:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Fatty Acid Oxidation and Cardiovascular Health
  • Diet and Epigenetic Impacts on Disease and Aging
  • Vitamin D—Health Benefits Beyond Bone
  • Health Effects and Mechanisms of Action of Xanthomumol
  • Health Benefits of Vitamin C: Beyond Scurvy
  • Micronutrients in Fertility and Pregnancy
  • Whole Food Approaches to Disease Prevention

Sponsorship

The conference was co-sponsored by the Oxygen Club of California, which will organize the OCC World Congress in June 2013 in Paris, France, co-sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute.

Poster Session

The conference featured a poster session, allowing scientists to share their latest research findings. The three most outstanding posters presented by graduate students or post-doctoral fellows received Young Investigator Awards.

Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research

A highlight of the conference was the awarding of the seventh Linus Pauling Institute Prize for Health Research, to Dr. Helmut Sies, a pioneer in the study of carotenoids and flavonoids. This international award, consisting of a medal and monetary award, recognizes innovation and excellence in research relating to the roles of vitamins, essential minerals, and phytochemicals in promoting health and preventing or treating disease; and the roles of oxidative stress and inflammation, and dietary antioxidant and anti-inflammatory factors, in human health and disease. Dr. Sies made a presentation on Friday, May 17, 2013.
