Age-essential micronutrients modify molecular targets that are responsible for the rate of aging, organ function, and disease onset. Healthspan, in contrast to lifespan, is the time in which we can minimize limitations in daily living attributed to age-related disease. Our mission is to provide a novel resource to researchers to measure the effects of dietary compounds on healthspan-related endpoints. These endpoints may include behavior, learning and memory, daily activity, body composition, pathology, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and gene expression.

The Healthy Aging Program (HAP) Core Laboratory is currently developing a new service to test the efficacy of vitamins, phytochemicals, and micronutrients to prolong health into advanced old age. We will use turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri, GRZ strain) as a model of vertebrate aging because their 3-4 month lifespan allows rapid collection of health-related data. The investigator will thus be able to determine the benefits of the nutrient under study over the life course. Researchers collaborating with the HAP Core Lab will be able to measure a variety of endpoints in conjunction with the ONSL and CPI core laboratories.
