School Garden Veggie Boxes
Access to fresh and affordable produce can be a challenge for low-income families. Research indicates that fruit and vegetable consumption plays an important role in a healthy diet, optimal growth, weight management, and prevention of chronic diseases. To improve access to healthy and affordable produce, the Healthy Youth Program piloted the Lincoln Farmers Market in 2014, to provide fresh produce at a reduced cost to South Corvallis community members. Due to demand and funding, in 2016, the Healthy Youth Program is continuing to increase accessto affordable fresh produce by offering no-cost subscriptions of School Garden Veggie Boxes (a type of Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA) to Lincoln Health Center clients, in addition to a limited number of fee-based subscriptions for families who can afford them (with another option to sponsor a subscription for a family in need).
Participants in the School Garden Veggie Boxes will receive a weekly box of seasonal vegetables and fruit from the school gardens managed by the Healthy Youth Program, and tended by high school students who are enrolled in our Urban Farm Fellowship. The Urban Farm Fellows help with school garden maintenance throughout the school year, and select students work for a stipend during the summer months to tend, harvest, and sell the plentiful produce through the Veggie Boxes.
Veggie Boxes will be available June through September, with two weekly pick-up locations: one at Lincoln Garden (at Lincoln Elementary School) and a second at Spartan Garden (at Corvallis High School). Pick-up days and times to be announced soon!
Families wishing to purchase a School Garden Veggie Box subscription ($100 for a 10-week subscription*; one box provided each week), or to sponsor a subscription for a family in need, can do so one of three ways:
