Inflammatory Pathways of EFA Metabolites in Skin

Boxed in yellow, LA and AA are the most abundant PUFAs in the epidermis. Supplementation with different EFA-rich oils can alter the fatty acid composition of the epidermis and influence the local production of eicosanoids. Noted in parentheses are inflammatory effects observed in skin. Importantly, eicosanoids have a complex mixture of anti- and pro-inflammatory effects; this is a simplification for illustrative purposes. Abbreviations: lipoxygenase (LOX), cycloxygenase (COX), prostaglandin (PG).
