LPI Welcomes New Development Director

The Linus Pauling Institute welcomed Jennifer Milburn to their development team in January. Jennifer, a native Oregonian and a graduate of Oregon State University, has a background in science, a strong interest in human health and athletic performance, and knowledge of fund-raising issues in higher education.

Jennifer assumes her new responsibilities from Ober Tyus, the former Development Director for LPI, who has recently taken over annual giving programs at the OSU Foundation. The OSU Foundation manages contributions to Oregon State programs, including LPI, and provides professional fund-raising staff with expertise in annual giving, estate planning, and stock donations.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your support of LPI, including estate planning and stock gifts, please don't hesitate to call Jennifer Milburn at 541-737-8724 or toll-free at 1-800-354-7281.

New Donor Challenge at Risk of Going Unmet!

The principal 1999-2000 LPI Challenge Grant—$50,000 to match an equal number of dollars from never-before-donors to the Linus Pauling Institute—risks going unmet with only $11,500 received toward the goal as of April 30th. Two longtime donors to the Linus Pauling Institute, interested in helping spread the burden of funding research, offered the Challenge last Fall. Each donor agreed to provide $25,000 in matching gift funds if an equal $50,000 was generated by June 30, 2000.

In addition to its traditional circulation, the LPI Spring Solicitation is going to more than 6,500 individuals who have never given to the Institute before, but who have expressed an interest in health research, with hopes their response may provide the difference needed to achieve the matching grant. To the 10,000+ individuals and couples who receive this newsletter, we ask you to please share the newsletter. By telling a family member, neighbor, or co-worker about the nutrition work of the Institute, you might just capture their interest in the work you already support. Any gift they make WILL count toward the match. Any gift can be sent payable to OSU Foundation (to assure tax deductibility) and earmarked on the memo line "For LPI" to:

Annual, renewable giving has always been the foundation for Dr. Pauling's research and is critical for the research of LPI Director, Dr. Balz Frei, and more than 25 scientists who make up the Linus Pauling Institute research staff. Those gifts, as well as special grants from corporations and foundations or bequest gifts provided through wills and estates, keep our nutrition research active and cutting edge. This newsletter is a reminder of the Institute's good work and represents the mission of Dr. Frei and everyone associated with the Institute to share the results of that research with the public. If you're pleased with what you've read in the preceding pages, please consider increasing your own gift and—especially this year with the $50,000 Challenge—telling another health-conscious individual how he or she can join you and others in supporting the program. Much like the Musketeers of old, "it's one for all and all for one."

Information on giving to the Linus Pauling Institute is available directly from the Institute at phone numbers and addresses in this newsletter, or through the Oregon State University Foundation, 1-800-354-7281. Thank you for whatever you can do to continue the good work started by Dr. Linus Pauling in 1973.
