Fund-raising Potpourri

I am currently serving as the interim Director of Development for the Linus Pauling Institute. I have worked with Dr. Balz Frei in the past and am very pleased to be doing so again. Dr. Frei and the LPI staff are very capable scientists, and I have enjoyed getting to know them better.

Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend a luncheon in Santa Monica, California, that was sponsored by the OSU Foundation. Stephen Lawson and Dr. Frei spoke about Linus Pauling, the Institute, and its most recent scientific work to a group of LPI supporters and friends. I was impressed with the group that attended the luncheon. They were passionate about maintaining good health and were very interested in hearing about LPI's research and recommendations for a healthy diet. Although my tenure as Development Director may be short, I look forward to every opportunity to meet with such dedicated friends of the Institute.

Private support from LPI's friends has enabled the Institute to do ground-breaking research on vitamins and micronutrients, provide graduate fellowships to student researchers, endow faculty positions, update old labs, purchase new equipment, and provide a prestigious award for exceptional health research. You are truly making a difference!

Some of our major fund-raising goals for this year include:

• Purchase of a mass spectrometer, $160,000
• 2005 LPI Prize for Health Research, $50,000
• Oxidative-Nitrative Stress Core Laboratory, $150,000 initially, $80,000 per year thereafter
• Graduate Student Fellowships, $56,000 each
• Endowed Professorship or Chair, $500,000 or $1,500,000, respectively
