Some nutrients may be synthesized by the body, in addition to being consumed in the diet. Choline is considered an essential nutrient, because even healthy individuals cannot synthesize enough to maintain health. Other nutrients can be synthesized in adequate amounts by healthy individuals, but may be required from the diet under conditions of stress or illness. Aging and chronic diseases may also increase the need for dietary intake of these conditionally essential nutrients.
